Fantastic video Liz! I live that the hand out on types of power has endured. I know I still find it useful. And reviewing the concepts is always super useful. What stood out for me is the idea of comfort as an additional element to power and privilege. This is a great way to explain why privilege is hard to see when you have it.
I sure enjoyed reading the two books you recommended, so much value in them both. And I can highly recommend the course you created on Power Rank and Privilege. I learned a lot about myself applying the concepts to my own experience especially where I feel disconnected from my own personal and social power. Some fantastic fundamentals for anyone interested in creating a more inclusive and equitable world.
Thanks Tathra, great to hear! Yes, we often don’t notice comfort because we’re wired to notice ‘what’s wrong’ rather than ‘what’s right’ and power and privilege (particularly structural power) frequently come with a lot of responsibilities that can feel stressful, so we notice the stress not the comfort. Like, “oh it’s really stressful being the CEO” – yes, it really is, but you can’t complain about that to subordinates who you have the power to sack or people who will never get to be a CEO because of structural discrimination. The comfort of being white is a really great example as well. White people, like me, have little idea how much everyday comfort we get from being white, it’s not easy to appreciate the absence of threat.
choice and control and comfort – the three C’s of privilege – thank you Liz, this is unforgettable! Huge appreciation, I’m already seeing it everywhere. a wonderful experience to watch this video, already viewed twice and each time got something new. Thank you. Julia
Oh that’s great Julia – the three C’s of privilege – I somehow missed the alliteration 🙂 Yes, it’s everywhere right? I haven’t been able to think of a situation where power isn’t in the background if not the foreground, but I’m open to suggestions.
